Aid transports
Goods donations for families, schools, hospitals, churches, etc.
We have been bringing relief supplies to Albania for over 30 years. The situation today is no longer as it was in 1992, but there are still people in need of material aid. In addition, second-hand school furniture, church chairs, hospital beds etc. as well as medicines and care products improve the work of institutions that have insufficient financial resources.
Relief supplies for Albania
Tables, chairs and blackboards for classrooms, bed linen and towels from hotels or textile services, church chairs, hospital beds and functional medical equipment, school satchels, bicycles and walking frames in good condition: we have already brought many relief supplies to Albania and handed them over to local partners. Incidentally, stoves are a great help, as many classrooms do not have acceptable heating facilities.
If you have donations in kind, please contact us. We then organize delivery or collection. The goods are temporarily stored in our depot near Wismar and assembled to truck loads. Next to used goods, we also welcome consumables for hospitals and care facilities – and also finances for transportation.
Family packages
For poor families, parcels containing relief supplies (food, hygiene articles, household stuff, individual items of clothing, etc.) provide tangible support. We distribute such boxes during family parcel campaigns in the mountain villages or in poor urban neighborhoods, during joint campaigns with the social administration or to individual families in need as required. Our staff in Wismar regularly prepare parcels, which are then taken along on aid transports and other trips. The team in Albania uses relief supplies delivered by DHHN and other donations in kind (sometimes also food purchased locally) to gather additional parcels, especially for larger campaigns.
For family parcels, we welcome suitable relief supplies (also palletized), but also empty banana boxes. And finances for transportation, of course.
Partners
- DHHN: The Deutsche Humanitäre Hilfe Nagold e.V. brings aid primarily to Eastern Europe, since 2014 also to Albania. It receives relief supplies from various donors – mostly food, detergents etc., but also hospital beds.
- The CHW Höxter group particularly works in Lezha (northern Albania). They organize relief supplies (for families, but also for churches) in the region, which are transported partly with own vans and partly with the transports from Wismar.
- MST Braitsch: Maritime Service & Transport from Leer has been supporting our work for many years with transportation by land and sea, e.g. the transfer of a decommissioned fire engine on the sea route from Wismar to Durrës and from there to Pogradec.
In normal times (without a special crisis), we carry out two or three truck shipments per year, plus transports with vans and DHHN shipments. Transports have taken place almost every year since 1992. Some highlights:
2022/23: Aid transports for Ukraine
Together with partners, we carry out several aid transports to Ukraine: for refugees in western Ukraine, for the Wismar twin town of Chornomorsk and for churches in eastern Ukraine, among others
2020/21: 5 additional transports
Travel is restricted during the Covid19 pandemic. To make it to Albania without any problems, Frieder Weinhold now goes there by truck and brings five aid transports within a few months.
Juli 2020: Aid transport for Lezha
The Höxter group continues to organize its own transports. Following the easing of travel restrictions, Josef Lutter once again brings family parcels, clothing etc. to Lezha and the surrounding area.
2020: Earthquake relief
After the earthquake in November 2019, we support the region initially with relief supplies and then with 14 emergency shelters from Scandinavia
2017: Dorf Mecklenburg warehouse
Rented storage rooms near Wismar enable the interim storing of school furniture, hospital beds, etc.
May 2018: Aid transport for Ohrid
For the first time, we bring relief supplies to North Macedonia: Beds etc. for a hospital in Ohrid
2016: Medical help for Dardhas
After a gas tank exploded, Diakonia Albania cares for the seriously injured for almost a year. We support them with donated medicines and care products from Germany.
June 2014: DHHN gets on board
Deutsche Humanitäre Hilfe Nagold, looking for a partner in Albania, has been sending aid transports to Pogradec several times a year ever since
2013: Pogradec warehouse
Renting storage rooms in Pogradec expands our logistical capabilities for delivery and distribution of relief supplies
2010: Winter relief
When supplies run low after a harsh winter in Bishnica, we support the residents with food
1999: Kosovo crisis
Large donations and collaboration with other organizations enable a large-scale commitment to Kosovo refugees in Albania
1997: Expansion in Bishnica
After the civil war, a social center and a church are built in Bishnica. We transport building materials and helpers from Germany.
1997: Civil war
We do not abandon Albania during the troubles and continue to bring aid to Pogradec and the villages – this earns us great respect
1992: First aid transport
Helpers from Wismar and the region bring relief supplies to a completely impoverished Albania shortly after the country opens up. And they come back: in the following years, we carry out many more transports.
